My wife and I want to spend four days in a small beach town near Barcelona. We will have a car so a drive is not a problem. Any suggestions?
Sitges is not far about 40km, and there is lots of beaches on the Costa Brava from 1-1.5 hour from Barcelona, depending where you stay, we stayed in a small village called l'Escala, there was a beach near Empuries.
We stayed in the charming little beach town of Llafranc, north of Barcelona, a few years ago and really liked it. Nice beach, beautiful walking trails, and boat rides from locals who take you in and out of the caves that line the coast in that area. Just google "Llafranc" to get pictures and info.
We really enjoyed our stay in Sitges. Lots of small hotels, restaurants and stores. The beach is sand (not pebbles) with a nice walkway. There's even a good sized grocery store near the train station. We parked the car and road the train into Barcelona. The place is a bit of an Artist colony and you'll see a few galleries with the local talent on display.
Peniscola, south of Barcelona, is a great seaside town with a slow pace of life - at least in Spring & Fall, summertime would be different. It is about 2.5 hr drive. There is a great castle - often referred to as the Gibraltar of this area.
We escaped to Collioure, a lovely little seaside village just over the French border, about 3 hours from Barcelona.
