Ok I read somewhere here about the Bayern-ticket in Salzurg. Does anyone have more information on this? How much it is? What it covers? Where to got it?
I have not personally bought a Bayern-Ticket in Salzburg, so I can't tell you for sure, but I believe you can buy one there from an automat for €28. There might also be a DB ticket counter. Buying one from the counter would cost €2 more, €30. A full Bayern-Ticket is valid for up to five people traveling together. There is also a Bayern-Ticket-Single for a single traveler for €20/€22.
There should be Bayern-Ticket sales at the Salzburg Hbf because it is right over the border from Germany, German Rail runs the trains from Germany into Salzburg Hbf, and it is considered a "border station". I have also seen Bayern-Tickets for sale at an automat in an Austrian station that was near the border, but not a "border station".
The Bayern-Ticket is valid for on/off regional train travel all day in Bayern (German for "Bavaria"), after 9 AM workdays. Accept for a few border stations (Salzburg, Kufstein, and Ulm) and a few lines outside Bavaria (the Ausserfernbahn from Pfronten to Garmisch-Partenkirchen), the Bayern-Ticket is only valid in the German state (Land) of Bavaria. All other German states have their own equivalent of the Bayern-Ticket.
We bought a Bayern-ticket at the automat a couple years ago. Look for the "Die Bahn" sign on the automat as opposed to "ÖBB". There was a "Die Bahn" counter at the station but it was not open any of the 3 times that we were there.

Gary,
was that one of the new touch screen DB automats?
Sorry Lee, I am not sure. I believe that it was a touch screen. We use the ticket automats a lot and they do run together in my mind.

i think rick's book has the price. i bought one in mnunich to salzburg last sep so i don't recall the price, but it's not very high. you get a window of couple of days with unlimited usage. i bought it from the DB window at Munich's east train station. for me it was a one way trip so i gave the ticket to some guy at the salzburg train station - if you want to save money you could ask people doing one way trip for a free ticket.
I gave the prices in my post, the first on this thread, the Bayern-Ticket (valid for 1-5 people) is €28 at an automat, €30 at the counter. The Bayern-Ticket-Single, for one person, is €20 and €22, automat and counter prices.
As for giving it to someone else, German Rail already thought of that. The Bayern-Ticket has a line where you are supposed to sign it. Then you have to be with the ticket at all times. When I forgot to sign it, the conductor stood right there making sure I did.
I guess if you "forgot" to sign it, and the conductor didn't check, you could give it to someone else.
One small correction to what Lee said. The line for your name is titled "Blockschrift" which means printed in block letters. I only point this out as it was pointed out to me. I had forgot to inscribe my name on a ticket. The conductor asked me to do so. I started to write my name long-hand and he shook his head and pointed to the "Blockschrift". They do not want any illegible scribble like my normal signature.

You're right, Gary. I must have read that, because I have always printed my name. They do that so they can compare it to some other form of ID, although they never have.
