Bayern Pass

We will be visiting Edelweiss Resort this fall. Is the Bayern Pass the best option for rail from Munich to Garmisch?

Also how early do the trains run? We will have to be back to the Munich airport in time to clear cutomons for a 10am flight. trip is about 1 1/2 . hours. Can we get a train a 5a.m.?

One way from Munich Hbf to Garmisch is €16.90, all on regional trains. A Bayern-Ticket costs €29, less than full fare for two people. It's good on regional trains, which seems to be about all there is on that line, so it would pay to use one. A Bayern-Ticket is also valid for all transit in the Munich metro district, MVV, so you could use it there as well. Note, however, that the Bayern-Ticket is only valid after 9 AM weekdays.

As for the return trip, the first train out of Garmisch is at 6:04, connecting to the S-Bahn in Munich and getting to the airport at 8:17. If that's not early enough you could leave the night before and stay over in Munich or at the airport.

I would suggest going back to Munich for one night (there are several inexpensive small hotels within a few blocks of the train station). It's an easy train trip in the morning - I think the connection mentioned above is much too tight for a 10:00 flight to the USA, even though Munich Airport is easier than some.

We have liked Freising for our last night before departing the Munich airport. It is an attractive little town 15-20 minutes from the airport by a public shuttle bus (< 3 euros/person) or a taxi (25-30 euros). The Hotel zur Gred is an inexpensive room in nice old Gasthaus not far from the train station:
