Bavarian towns not in the guidebooks

I will be driving/staying in Bavaria for 3wks this sept. In addition to all the amazing larger, well-known cities/towns, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions to smaller, lesser-known, unique towns in the area? We are staying directly inside the Bavarian forest for 10 of those days. Thank you

Get a ADAC StraßenAtlas (Book of road maps.) Scenic towns/villages, many not in guide books, are highlighted in yellow. Very scenic stops are highlighted and boxed in red. Plus, scenic routes will be lined in green. We found it a good way to spot scenic layovers while driving.

It would be easiest to buy the atlas there but you can order it from Amazon.de if you want it for planning.

Two books with info on lots of small towns in Bavaria: DK Eyewitness Guide: Munich and the Bavarian Alps. Also, Fodor's Exploring Germany.

Some seldom-mentioned Bavarian towns I've enjoyed:

Toward the north:

Neustadt-an-der-Aisch

Eichstaett (very attractive buildings)

Pappenheim

Weissenburg (old walled town)

In the south:

Diessen (on Ammersee Lake south of Munich, nice base town for seeing southern Bavaria)

Straubing

Russ-thanks for those suggestions. I am staying in a little town about 10 min north of straubing, so that is perfect! There is just something about small towns that I love:)
