Bavarian Lakes

We are going to Germany in two weeks. we will be spending five nights in Mittenwald. I had seen pictures of Tegernsee and thought it looked beautiful. Now I am wondering if it is worth the drive or if there are other lakes closer. (We will have a car.) I love beautiful scenery and hiking/walking and generally prefer old quaint historic towns to modern resorts. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

p.s. For our 4 full days we are planning one to Garmish and the Zugspitze (weather permitting), one to Neuschwanstein area and one to Hall, Austria and possibly into Italy. I'm still undecided on the 4th day but am leaning towards hanging out in Mittenwald and hiking in the mountains there rather than driving to Tegernsee.

You can kill 3 birds with one stone. The Eibsee sits at the base of the Zugspitze. If you ride the Zugspitzebahn, the Eibsee lies a short walking distance from the station of the same name. Or if you prefer, you can drive there from Garmisch.

Hi Carroll,

Sounds like you have your days well planned. Tegernsee isn't really worth the trip in my opinion. If you have a "free" day, I'd spend it around Mittenwald. Beautiful area.

Hall in Tirol is one of our favorite old towns. It's just under an hour drive from Mittenwald. From Hall, the very charming old town of Sterzing/Vipiteno (in Italy) is just 30 minutes away and just a little further is our favorite old town in the area... Brixen/Bressanone. Just on the outskirts of Sterzing is Reifenstein Castle. Rick Steves talk about it in his book. A heads up... you need four people to tour the castle. We tried with three and the woman who lives there wouldn't let us in without four.

Also, on the way into Garmisch, there's a Sommerrodelbahn (luge ride) that's a lot of fun. Coming from Mittenwald towards Garmisch, you'll see a sign on the left hand side just before entering the town. There's also another luge ride one mile from Neuschwanstein at Tegelberg.

Hope this helps.

I'd skip Tegernsee, it's pretty, but you may have other things you really want to do. Also - I think Italy's a bit far for a day trip from Mittenwald.

We were just down in this area this summer visiting my brother in law. We're heading down again in a few weeks when my parents fly over from the US. I say skip the Zugspitze and do the mountain right next to it. It's cheaper and more scenic. You can go up the Kreuzeck on a very modern cable car then take an easy walk to the next cable car that takes you to the top of the Alpspitze (or you can hike that middle section, not too bad at all). Walk around up there then take it's own cable car straight down to the bottom. You end up making a triangle up and across the mountains while getting a fantastic view of the Zugspitze since you're right next to it. Much more fun.(IMO)

Also-if you go to Eibsee with your car you'll have to pay a parking fee. You can walk there from the furthest Zugpsitze connection, but you should check on whether or not it's ok to leave your car there so long.

Right outside of town in Mittenwald is a really cool looking gorge hike. The TI in the middle of town can give you maps, as likely can your lodging reps. There are suspension bridges, etc. and it's supposed to be kid-friendly. We ran out of time this summer, but are going to try to do that when we head down again in a few weeks.

Also-we had Frommer's 25 Best Driving Tours in Germany with us, along with our GPS, and it was fantastic, lots of fun, good ideas, and Mittenwald is where 2-3 tours overlap. Just heading north from Mittenwald towards Munich (~10 min north of town?) you can take a private road where you pay 3 Euro, and drive alongside the river-very pretty, places to stop on the way; we give it 3 thumbs up. Worth finding.

sorry to continue so long, but we were JUST there a couple months ago and are going again in a few weeks! =)

There are SO many Alpine lakes, but in all our driving around, we thought Walchensee was the prettiest; Caribbean blue b/c of the rock deposits. Drive north from Mittenwald towards Kochel-am-See and then on to Benediktbeueren. In this TINY town follow signs to the Kloster (monastery) you can also just look for the twin spires. Not only is it gorgeous, but no tour buses jam it up, and it's Biergarten is well priced, generous servings, and has gourmet and regular food. My BIL lives right around here so that's how we got the insider's scoop on this place.

Honestly, Benediktbeueren is a fantastic backdoor! Skip the monastery at Ettal b/c it's all tricked out and spend your time/energy going to the Baroque monastery in Benediktbeueren. This is the first post on Steve's website about it, and I kinda hesitate to put it on there, but gosh, it's way better than Ettal!

Also - Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GAP) can kind of make you crazy b/c it's so big, crowded and touristy. Make sure you have a good map of town before zipping around. I'm really good with directions, etc, but we got turned around twice trying to find one of the TIs, don't ask me how!

The Eibsee is incredibly beautiful, well worth the couple of euros to park. It is about 7 kilometers around, and we try to do the round once in winter and once in spring or summer.

We got lost near Linderhof a couple of years ago and discovered the Plansee (it's on the maps). We had a lovely picnic right on the See; no town, but an idyllic spot.

Are there any towns on or near the Eibsee?

There is a fancy hotel on the Eibsee, but no town. The closest town is Grainau, which is just gorgeous and mainly all holiday apartments, gasthauses, inns, etc. The next town from that is Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is huge. It's pretty linear as you'll see if you google-map the Eibsee.

Eibsee to Grainau is about 10 min, if that. Grainau to GAP is maybe 25-30 min tops.

If you're staying in Mittenwald, Garmisch-Partenkirken and Grainau are less than an hour away by car. You can easily see GaP, the Zugspitze and Eibsee all in only a few hours. Although GaP is my favorite base for Alpine activities, if you stay in Mittenwald (also a great Alpine base), there really isn't that much more to see in GaP.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I am definitely dropping Tegernsee, will definitely do Eibsee and look into the other suggestions. I really do appreciate the help.
