There is plenty to do in Munich, from eating in the beer gardens of the English Gardens to even seeing the Dachau concentration camp, which I strongly recommend.

Since you want to go see the Jungfrau and you want to do an extreme sport, take a look at the Via Ferrata between Murren and Gimmelwald.

You might check out using trains for this trip.

I know you don't need (or want) a car in Munich, and virually everything in Bavaria is accessible by train and at a lower cost than a day of car rental.

As I understand it, a car is also not necessary in the Berner Oberland.

As for getting from Munich to Interlaken, the cost of just fuel, according to Michelin, for a compact car, if you're willing to spend 5 hours driving that small a car, is €85. Plus you have a days rental, road fees unless the car already has stickers, and probably fees to drop off the car in another country. The lowest rail fares (Europa-Spezial Schweiz) I found for 2 adults from Munich to Interlaken were €78 via Friedrichshafen and Singen. I also found the trip via Zurich and Bern for €98 for 2 adults. If your son is 14 or less, it's half that fare because he travels free with you.

There is also sky diving in the Mt. Titlis area which is located outside the small town of Engelberg and close to the city of Luzern. The luge, or sommerwolderbahn (sp?) is also a great thrill. The Tegelburg luge is south of Munich by Neuschwanstein castle.

Have fun making lifetime memories with your son!

With only four days, I would stick to the Bavarian Alps. You can do almost anything in Bavaria and the Tyrol that you could in Switzerland, and for much less money. Plus, it takes the better part of a full day to drive from southern Bavaria to the Jungfrau area.

In Switzerland you don't need a car. Especially if you are going to the Jungfrau your car will be useless. Switzerland has a magnificent public transport system that is fast, efficient and clean. Buying some sort of a Swiss Pass will get you hefty discounts for the EXPENSIVE Jungfrau trip.

Not sure if you're going to the Jungfrau region or your son's age. We stayed in Murren and daytripped over to Grindlewald and went Trottibiking from Bort back down -think razor but adult size??(gondola up, rent bike/helmet, come down). My boyfriend and I went with his parents (50/60's) and although we weren't sure if it would be hokey it was such a fun time. After that we took a gondola from Grund (15 minute walk from Grindlewald) up to Mannlichen, had lunch up there and enjoyed the view and then took a cableway to Wengen and made our way back to Murren.
