Bavaria in June 2011

This is our first trip to Germany. We will arrive in Munich in early June, planning on staying in Munich and doing daytrips. We want to see: Mittenwald, Zugspitze, Berchtesgaden, Olbersalzburg/Eagles Nest, Neuschwanstein, Salzburg. I know this is a broad question but any suggestions on things to see/do? We plan on spending 2-4 days touring Munich and another 4-5 days seeing other sites. Thank you.

Berchtesgaden with an R, Obersalzberg. Salzburg (Austria) is the fortified city which was the center of the Salt trade. Obersalzberg was a village, perhaps the higher of two, the other being Untersalzberg, in a mountainous area containing salt mines. Might be easier to find if you know the correct spelling. . . . . . ¶ Obersalzberg is the village at the base of the Kehlstein, the mountain on which the Eagles' Nest sits. It's only a few minutes away by bus from the Hauptbahnhof in Berchtesgaden. From Obersalzberg you take special mountain buses up a private road to the Eagles' Nest. Round trip on the buses plus the elevator to the restaurant costs €15,50. Admission to the building itself, for those hardy enough to hike up, is free. . . . . ¶ Berchtesgaden itself is a picturesque town itself and worth some time, as is Königssee, the glacial lake nearby. And Salzburg is about an hour away by bus or rail. The whole area could easily consume 3 days. . . . . . . ¶ You could probably go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, see the Zugspitze, then go on to Mittenwald in a day. Füssen and Neuschwanstein are worth another day.

Thank you Martine. Yes the name of the apartment might be helpful. It sounds like we need 3 nights and the rest in Munich to do daytrips and see Munich. I appreciate the help and the spelling lessons!

You're spending 2-4 days in Munich and then planning daytrips outside of Munich during that same time? That doesn't make any sense. Munich is beautiful, fun and has many things to see and experience. Why would you use it as a base and not actually see the city while you're there? Yes, there are some easy daytrips like Salzburg. But give yourself 2-4 days just in Munich.

Lee, yes, correct spelling does help! So does a spellchecker. It sounds like we should stay overnight a few nights in/near Berchtesgarden? That was one of the things I was considering, thanks for the tips. Tim, We will spend 2-4 days touring Munich and 4-5 touring other spots. Thanks for the advice!

"It sounds like we should stay overnight a few nights in/near Berchtesgarden" It's a nice place, but it's still spelled wrong. Drop the 2nd "r", and you'll be able to search for places to stay.

A nice place to stay around Berchtesgaden in at the Gausthaus Maria Gern. It's right next to the Maria Gern church and the views are great! We had a room done in traditional Bavarian style with a balcony that looked out over the little valley. The Documentation Center at Obersalzburg is a good way to learn about the area and its part in WWII.
