Hi Orrin,

We love Mittenwald!!! We stayed at the Pension Schwalbennestl twice (Apr. '05 and Oct. '06) and love the place. Nice rooms, good buffet breakfast, very nice owner/host (Frau Bader), and spectacular vistas from their "deck" and the room balconies!

The website is in German only, yet you can correspond in English via e-mail.

We have some pic's at:

Hope this helps.

We enjoy staying in Lermoos, Austria which is south of Garmisch-P. Not a large town like Garmisch, however, it has lots of zimmers/pensions and great restaurants. Great views of the Zugspitz. It's close to Reutte. Check out the website www.lermoos.at

Hi Orrin,
... Two years ago Tom and Luann Fitzpatrick did an extensive tour of Bavaria — and took some very good photos. Suggest you use your mouse to copy and paste the above link into your Internet search box. Then, touch the ENTER key of your computer keyboard. When you have the thumbnail photos on screen, click on the "slideshow" button. You should get a full-screen presentation — and maybe discover places you want to see in person... Gute Reise! P

We usually stay at Gasthaus Kornmuller or Sonnenblume (same family), just off the Marienplatz in Garmisch. It is centrally located for doing most daytrips and costs about 60 euros a night for the small 1 bedroom apt. They do not serve breakfast, but there is a bakery nearby where you can stock up on breakfast stuff or sit and watch the world.

We have also stayed at Zum Rose in Oberammergau, which was cheap a few years ago.

For a splurge, the Eibsee Hotel in Grainau is great. Nice rooms, good staff, and gourmet 4 course dinner every night (also excellent breakfast).
