my wife and i are trying to decide our trip to see bavarian castles. the questions are: is it better to use the bayern ticket and see neushwanstein/hohenschwangau and then back to munich or to take the bus tour to nstein and linderhof? i realize the big cost difference. my wife and i would like to hear from anyone who has done these trips to help us make the decision. thanks
I highly recommend taking a bus tour from Munich.
We took this one. The guide comments about the areas as you are traveling. Bus VERY clean. Well worth the money. Reservations for lunch is arranged for you, although not included in price of tour. There is a stop in Oberammergau for shopping or just walk around the village. Wonderful tour.
Never bought a "packaged tour" to do these places. We always stay the night in the little village of Horn - just outside Fuessen. From Horn you have a magnificent view of the castles neushwanstein and hohenschwangau. As for Linderhof, it's a very short and pleasant little drive from Horn. As beautiful as neushwanstein is, I think Linderhof is actually a nicer place with all of its gardens, fountains and grottos.
I would highly recommend you to spend the night with a rental car in Horn to do these trips. If you do all of them in a single day from Munich (and I don't know if it's actually do-able) you will be dog tired and you won't enjoy it nearly as much as if you had done it on your own.
