We are looking at renting a car from Basel and driving to Paris taking a few days to stop at some interesting places/villages on the way. Has anyone done this itinerary and could share some places to plan to stop. Also where would be best to spend the night?
First, you will probably want to pick up the car in France. If you rent in Switzerland and drop off in France, it would be more expensive. If you're picking up the car at the Basel Airport, they may have a way of picking up your car in France, as the Airport sits right on the border of France and Switzerland (if I recall correctly). Otherwise, you could hop a train to Mulhouse and pick the car up there. You could drive to Beaune, explore Burgundy and then to Paris. Or you could drive through the Alsace to Strasbourg and to Paris from there. I driven both and enjoyed both. I love Burgundy, but Alsace has some very pretty little villages. Have fun!
Alsace is a pure delight. We based in Colmar
You can absolutely rent a car from French side of the Basel/Mulhouse airport. You simply enter MLH as the airport pickup code. I've lived in Alsace for the last three years, and absolutely adore the area. Colmar is nice but there are so many little typical villages to explore, especially along the Route de vin. Lovely little churches, museums, restaurants, shops...I could go on and on. And, this is a very unique area of France because of its combined French and German heritage. The local people really work hard to preserve their history, and it shows.
