Looking for suggestions on the best base for touring the Battle of the Bulge sites and the Ardennes. Am leaning to Ettelbruck or some other city in Luxembourg since we head to Paris from Luxembourg City on the train. Plan to rent a car for the 2.5 days we will be in the Ardennes region. Thanks so much for help. Dave

We stayed in Bastogne, Belgium for three nights last September and thought it was a good base. Luxembourg is pretty small, so I would guess anywhere in the country could work as well. The driving was very easy and the countryside is quite pretty. My favorite stops were the Easy Company fox holes near Foy, the military history museum in Diekirch, and the American cemetary in Hamm. The museum in Bastogne is also nice, but not as nice as the one in Diekirch.
Carroll, Did you do the Bastogne region on your own, or did you hire a guide or go on a tour there? We are thinking about going there in the fall and are looking for options.
We found a very cozy country hotel in Luxembourg, just over the Belgian border near Bastogne. It's called the Domaine du Moulin d'Asselborn, in the town of Asselborn. It even has its own little 'museum' of Battle of the Bulge artefacts found in the local countryside. www.hotelvieuxmoulin.lu/
Thank you all for the help. We are fans of Band of Brothers so we will definitely look for the Easy Company foxholes around Foy and the cemeteries in and around the area. Dave
Dave, We booked Henri Mignon for a two day tour. Unfortunately, he got sick when we were there so we ended up doing it on our own. I'm sure we would have seen more and learned more with Henri, but we really enjoyed our time exploring on our own. The first day, we followed roughly the itinerary we were going to follow with Henri. The second day we went to the museum in Diekirch in the morning, then spent the afternoon at the castle in Vianden, which was great. It's pretty close to Diekirch. and was a nice change of pace. If you do it on your own, make sure to look up the location of the Easy Company fox holes on the intranet before you set out to find them.
