We're spending 5 nights near Sarlat and then want to move a bit further south to explore the Lot River Valley including Grotte du Pech Merle. Does anyone have a recommendation for a base for 2-3 nights. We'll have a car. Cahors? Figeac? St-Cirq-Lapopie is a consideration but limited accommodations. Other suggestions? We'll head to Toulouse next...
We liked Cahors though didn't stay there. Seemed to be lots of eating and sleeping options, plus a great medieval bridge, interesting church and cloister, remains of a Roman bath, and the Lot was lovely. Haven't been to Figeac or St-Cirq, but they're smaller.
If there is any way you can swing rooms in St.-Cirq, go for it! It was awarded the most beautiful village in France 2013 by the Plus Beaux Villages de France organization.
