how does this plan look? Family of 6 in Europe for 2.5 weeks in Aug.(Switzerland/Italy/Balitc cruise).
This is 1st time visit to Europe for kids (9,9,13) and MIL. We are flying to Zurich and staying in Z for 3 nights (we have almost free place to stay). We plan to get 4 day SwissPAss. The primary focus of the trip is Italy and Baltics, but we decided to fly nonstop into Z to see a bit of Switzerland. Here is our plan"
1st day--arrive, refresh, rest, tour around Zurich:
2nd day--Lucerne and up Mt Rigi:
3rd day--Stein en Rhien and boat ride on Rhine:
4th day--train to Lugano for a few hours---then onto Italy
We wanted to have the 3 days in Switzerland in 1 place, as we are in 3 different hotels in Italy, and then onto a week long Baltic cruise. We are not locked into this plan, in case anyone else has a different plan, but we need 2 triple rooms and everyplace I look is quite $$$, except Z--where we have a very good deal at a very nice hotel. With MIL, hiking in the Alps is out, so Bernese Oberland does not appeal to us as much as others. thanks, Elaine
Forget Zurich - head for the Lauterbrunnen Valley! Zurich is nice, but nothing compares to the Berner Oberland. You have almost a free place to stay in Zurich, but if you're spending all that money to get to Europe and stay 2.5 weeks your ambition should be to see the most amazing things possible - not getting a free room. There are many affordable places to stay in and around Lauterbrunnen. I highly recommend the little village of Mürren. Try to book the Chalet Fontana which is the best bargain in the Alps.
BTW, all of you kids will travel for free with you in Switzerland.
That's terrific that you found an inexpensive ("almost free") place to stay in Zurich. I also think that it's good that you have a day scheduled to rest--you might decide to add something there--but you don't have to make any of these decisions right now. Have fun!
