Base in southern france

Hello- We will have 6 nights in southern France. Our plan is to take the train from Paris to Avignon and pick up a rental car. I was thinking 3 nights in Uzes & 3 nights in L'isle sur la surge to be able to experience 2 different towns in the evening? a good plan? We want to visit Carcasonne. St Remy, Pont du gard, Arles. Then drop off the car back in Avignon to take the train back to Paris. I am sure this involves some back-tracking which s ok. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks,
Robbie

Robbie, I'd have to give some thought to which town in the south would be best for the places you want to visit. However, I'd suggest spending two nights in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue rather than three. It's a beautiful town, especially with the canals and water wheels, but I'm not sure there's enough there to justify three nights. Happy travels!

I don't know whether there is a lot of "action", but it is a very charming town and very well located to visit other towns in the vicinity. Uzes is very small but again, well located for the western edge of Provence. I might suggest something north, like Vaison la Romaine for the Cotes du Rhone area. However, my main question would be Carcassone. It is very interesting, but quite a drive as a day trip from Provence.

Uzes is definitely worthwhile for its location and its charm. The only possible alternative to consider in the area is Nimes, but only if you'd prefer a city. As to Isle sur la Sourgue, I haven't stayed overnight there, but I've enjoyed all my visits, albeit they were all on the market day. I's a good location if you want to see the hill towns of the Luberon. The alternative of Vaison someone mentioned is a good idea for more northerly towns, as is the spectacular village of Nyons.

Ilse was a bit of a sleepy town and could be seen in a day. Arles and Vaison le Romain would have more going on. I also like Vence.
