We are planning to stay in the Mosel/Rhine area for 4 days - visiting Trier, a few castles (Burg Eltz, Rheinfels, Marksburg), a river cruise and hopefully some outdoor adventures. Is Cochem a good place to base from or should we split between 2 locations closer to our planned activities?
Cochem is a nice town. I tried to make reservation for Cochem last November. However, that was for travel completely on the Mosel. I think that that is too far south for both the Rhein (Rheinfels, Bacharach, and the Marksburg) and the Mosel (Cochem, Trier).
Four days is hardly enough time to split. In fact, four days is hardly enough time for that area, at all. In 2004 I spent 5 nights on the Rhein (Boppard). In 2008 I went back and spent 4 nights on the Mosel (Treis). Nine nights, that is more like it.
I would stay in Koblenz, the "hinge" of that area, but it is a large city and probably too expensive. My second choice would be Braubach (www.braubach.de), home of the Marksburg. It is readily accessible to both rivers via train or bus to Koblenz.
hi cynthia. we are staying in koblenz for our base to cruise the mosel and rhine rivers. we found a very nice hotel on the rhine. second floor with private balcony and breakfast for $95 usd. hotel merklbach. happy travels, milo.
Weinhaus Wieghardt in Braubach is on the market square in the old town. The trolly comes through the square on the way to the castle. A double room is about $80 per night (4 nights and up).
I haven't stayed there, but I did eat there. When I was there I asked the owner if she spoke English and if she ever had English speaking guest. She said she did, but she told me in German, so I don't know how well.
They are only 15 min by train from the Koblenz Hbf.
I like Cochem a lot for the Mosel. On the Rhine, my favorite is Burg Stahleck castle above Bacharach. Koblenz, although conveniently located, isn't that great.
Hi Cynthia - I spent a week in Cochem last summer, and found it to be a great base for the Mosel area - Burg Eltz, Beilheim, etc. I might do a different Rhine base to save travel time.
