Basal?

Hello,
I have booked Rhine Rive tour with Viking from Amsterdam to Basal. I would like to chill out for a few days before flying home. I am more interested in enjoying local cuisine, culture and enjoying daily life than sightseeing. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to end my first trip to Europe?

Well... a HUGE part of the "local culture" in Basel is business conferences and sabaticals. The combination of the high tech university and the dozen or so large internationl corporations based there makes this one of the most prominent international business cities on the continent. So, a big part of Basil's "culture" is shaped by the international character of its population and the wealth that said-population generates. A large part of "daily life" is people in suits going to meetings. But don't despair, lest you get the impression that the city is all concrete, steel and glass. It actually is quite well preserved, and very walkable. But unless you check out some of it's world-class museums, I can't imagine what you might do with several days. Perhaps venture a little further south and enjoy the splendor of the Alps (not visible from Basel, but not too far away)? Head to Montreaux and enjoy the lake?

Colleen, My suggestion would be to head straight for Lucerne after your river cruise. It's an easy one hour (or so) rail trip from Basel. It's a beautiful city and even if you're not sightseeing, there are lots of stores to browse, nice restaurants along the river, relaxing cruises on the lake, etc. Which airport will you be flying home from? Happy travels!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. That is exactly what I was looking for; something more rural or at least pastoral. I do have an interest in cheese making if there is an opportunity to explore that, I would be delighted. Any suggestions for B&B or hotel? I have not booked a flight home yet because I wanted the flexibility to perhaps travel from Basal if necessary.

I do have an interest in cheese making if there is an opportunity to explore that, There absolutely is! Gruyere is an easy day trip from Basel. In addition to the cheese factory there is also a picturesque village with a min-castle, shopping, and the HR Giger museum if you are info sci-fi. Also nearby is the Nestle Callier chocolate factory which is open to the public. It's 2.5 hours by train from Basel, and it's quite scenic as you get closer to Gruyere.

Would also recommend Lucerne. You can get a train from there direct to the Zurich airport for your return.
