Barging in France (w/kid and bicyles)

So I just heard the R.S. interview on my NPR about barging in France and am very interested in finding our some more information. This would be a gift for my parents with us. We are only interested in self-catered - they are true DIY-ers, and like "roughing" it. I googled Barging in France and of course I was presented with lots of choices. Anyone here have a reccomendation of a company that worked well with them? or didn't? We are thinking of Burgundy and would be taking 4 adults and 1 kid.

Other than that does anyone have any unusual or interesting advice on their experience (other than it was great)? Things to think about etc...

(a note: My husband is French, and I have lived and worked in France for many years so know the country well, neither of us have ever done something like this though)

Also we are taking our son. He will be 3 1/2. He is a seasoned traveler, we car camp, hike, bicycle tour, canoe/kayak, and RV alot. Not taking him is not an option, as this trip will coincide with a family visit to G.Mere/Pere. Any words of wisdom about this?

Renting bikes:(I have also posted this question alone) Biking is a must, we would like to rent bikes, but as I mentioned above taking the tot. We are seasoned bicyclists and tour. Are the bikes that are available for rent of a decent quality and good for about 20-30k leasurily rides? Also are they set up to haul a trailer? or are kid trailers available to rent?

Thank you for any words of wisdom!

We have barged in France and also in Italy and Ireland for the last 10 summers. We have booked with www.leboat.com and www.nicols.com. Leboat is based in the US and represents several boat companies. Nichols is based in France and only rents their own boats. Favorite routes are the Canal du Midi, the Baise and Lot, and the Saone river in Burgundy. The Canal du Midi has more locks than the river routes but if you have 4 adults you will be able to manage them easily. The boats are easy to operate and the navigation is not hard. All of the boat companies rent bikes but you may have to bring your own kid trailer. Perhaps they would have a child seat available instead, you'll need to check.Biking on the old tow paths along the Canal du Midi would be better than biking along the river routes. Please e-mail if you have any further questions that I can help you with. Bon Voyage!
