Has anyone done any canal barging in France? We are wanting to do this at the end of Sept. on our own for maybe 4 days or so. Any suggestions please?
We hired a small boat on the Canal du Midi several years ago, from Beziers to Carcassonne. There are several other start locations with different companies. It's a lot of fun and very, very slow. We got the smallest boat available (only 2 of us), but learned that having a little bit bigger boat, with an upper level can help with the ropes at the locks. I don't know if you can do self-hire for only 4 days. If you google "Canal du Midi", you should get info on a lot of companies - that have boats on other canals as well.
We have not been barging, but know a lovely spot to do it. The Burgundy canal north of Beaune along the A6 is lovely . We photograph there in the Fall. Vandenesse- en Auxois is where you would get a boat. Very close to Chateauneuf en Auxois and the vineyards of Burgundy. This is only about 3 hours south of Paris and a lovely drive. If you are interested in any places to stay in the area, we go every year to photograph.
