I stayed at Hotel Lloret at the top of the Ramblas recently and was happy with the accommodations. And it was inexpensive (51 Eu for Sb), with a good buffet breakfast for an extra 5 Eu. The Ramblas and Bari Gotic area are fun, convenient to transportation, and walking distance from lots of places. You make your own romance!

Try http://www.thefiverooms.com/ its a botique B+B near the center of town. The Ramblas area is always full of action, but can be quite noisy til the wee hours. Remember, they eat late there, so they stay up late too.
You won't have any problem finding food or drink in Barcelona!
