Not quite an equal choice but since you asked, I would chose Barcelona because of Ramblas and the architecture (Gaudi).

To experience Spain...Madrid, without a doubt.

That's Barcelona versus Madrid (grossly oversimplified...). For my time, I'd choose Madrid -- but if you'll say more about what you like to do, we may be able to help.

For the culture and art I would say Madrid over Barcelona.

I do not know which would offer the best music opportunities.

My personal preference was Barcelona when I travelled to both this fall. However, I would agree that if you are looking for art, Madrid is the place to be. Three of the best museums in the world.

I've heard it said that if you want to go to Spain, go to Madrid. If you want to go to Europe, see Barcelona.

based on personal experience only: Madrid

I never got to visit Barcelona when I lived in Madrid for a school year so am planning to visit when I'm there in May.

You can't go wrong either way, but I'd vote for Madrid. Besides the amazing art museums, it just feels a little more welcoming, like everyone is welcome to join the party.

Also, if you know Spanish or are hoping to practice your Spanish, Barcelona can be a little frustrating, since Catalan is the first language there. Most people who speak native Catalan also know "castellano", but it's a bit of a touchy issue there. But since most of the people associated with the tourist industry there speak English, it isn't really a problem -- just a little disappointing if you really want to put your Spanish to use. Madrid, on the other hand, is great for that purpose.

They are both beautiful cities, but in my opinion, Barcelona beats Madrid hands down. As has already been said, Madrid is more of a Spanish city, while Barcelona is more European. That said, I think that Barcelona remains very Spanish, but is certainly different than Madrid ( as Catalan is very different from much of Spain ).

Madrid has wonderful museums, but Barcelona is a place to just wander around and get lost in. It's one of my most favorite cities. I could stay there for a long, long time. There's so much to do and see. And the history is fascinating. It also has the sea. If I were to choose ( having been to both ), I'd go to Barcelona in a heartbeat. It's a truly wonderful place.

Either one is a great choice....I have visted both and you will find either one to be fantatic....but, think I would choose Madrid for a first trip...the Gran Via, Park Retiro, The Prado...and the list goes on!

Enjoy your trip!!
