Hey travel family!
I am traveling with my 3 kids and their friend (all girls ages 11-17) and would love to know the "musts" to visit during our 4 days in Barcelona. I am getting Rick's Barcelona travel guide, but would love any "musts" for activities, restaurants etc! Do you recommend getting one of those "city" tourist passes? Also, it seems easy to travel by subway there as well. Do I get a pass for the subway? Appreciate all your help! Marni
Uh, you might want to edit the title of your question from "pics" to "picks", as you seem to be offering salacious photos ("pics").
I agree with Larry. When I first saw your post, I thought it was some kind of spam. Why not have your kids and their friend research things they'd like to do and places to eat?
Yes, that thread headline is going to pull some people in! As Sarah said, let the kids research it, that way they'll be invested in the trip and hopefully look forward to seeing the places they picked in person instead of just being taken to the restaurants and sites
It could be worse. The title could have been Barcelona topless pics with teenage girls!
Omg! I didn't even realize the headline! On my cell phone and will edit when I get back to office! With finals, AP tests, state track meet etc could be hard to get them to focus until early June! Any guidance appreciated! Marni
Well you got a bunch of dirty old men checking out your question. Oh wait... Ok - they will certainly want to hang out on the beach. They will love the action on the Ramblas - just be alert to all the pickpockets roaming about there. No problem if you all are wearing money belts, but if the girls have things in purses slung over their shoulder, whatever is inside might disappear. The food market might be a fun walk for them to see all the variety of foods and it is stuffed with people and colors. Some of Gaudi's architecture will be interesting since it is so wild. Parc Guell for sure, they can hang out and roam the grounds and check out the Candyland houses. Sagrada Familia is also a must, they might like the tour up the tower. Though expensive, I also recommend Casa Batllo. The interior is very whimsical, like an underwater fantasy. The roof deck there is small but covered with colorful tiles. I think they will enjoy that more than Casa Mila. Tapas for food is perfect - the girls can pick and choose whatever they like and avoid things that look "icky." Good for sharing too. La Tramoia, near Placa Catalunya is a good place to start. It's more fancy and has a long bar with their cold tapas in a glass case - they can see what to choose from. Once they get comfy with what they like and don't, try some places in the Bari Gothic.
Barcelona bike tour by Fat Tire Bike Tours, they will have a gas , and so will you ! I have done them in Paris and London and can thoroughly recommend them. They are not strenuous( I am middle aged and not a gym rat) but are a fun way to see some highlights in a city.. look at their website.. bet it will be a "top pic" for the girls too! lol PS I too chuckled at thread title and I am not a dirty old man ! lol
Being that I'm a mom, my first reaction to the title was, "I bet someone forgot the k - they're gonna need to change that!" My kids loved all things Gaudi while we were there. They really enjoyed the Runnerbean Gaudi tour. We spent a lot of time at Park Guell (luckily we had perfect weather that day). Las Ramblas held their interest for a limited amount of time. The Trocadero market was good. I've got one daughter who really likes Picasso, so we had to make a stop at the Picasso museum. You could also consider doing a boat tour. Traveling by subway is easy, but it doesn't cover the whole city. You'll need to take buses, too (definitely to get to Park Guell). Without knowing your plans, it's hard to say whether any of the passes make sense, although it's unlikely you'd get your money out of them. I agree that tapas are a good choice for meals. Just be warned that the cost can add up quickly. Don't be afraid to try things you wouldn't normally eat. My family discovered we actually like Octopus while in Barcelona.
It's always hard to pick what others will like, so I usually go with clues from you. You mentioned track; Barcelona hosted an Olympics. You can visit the area where the Olympic Village was. I'd probably start by walking down the Ramblas (from Placa Catalunya) to the beach end, then up the beaches and plan to end at the Olympic Village (around the big fish looking sculpture). Here's some things you might enjoy: Shopping: El Corte Ingles in Placa Catalunya is a large department store (actually takes up several buildings around the large square). The girls may like buying something from Spain, other than a souvenir t-shirt. They have one whole store of teen fashions. Also a good place to pick up cheap cell phones. Market: The Market off the Ramblas, the Boqueria, is interesting - if only so the girls can be grossed out by some of the food offered there. Guided walk: The Gothic District walk, which is run (edited, sounds like it's a walk/run) by tourist information office, out of St. James square, is affordable and informative. Beaches: Already mentioned, the beaches in Barcelona aren't the greatest but not bad. You can also take a train up or down the coast (I'd suggest Arenys de Mar) for a nicer beach day. Parks: Visit a park as well as Modernist architecture at Parc Guell. Modernist architecture: If interested, there are some pretty wild looking buildings at the Block of Discord (not far from Placa Catalunya). Montjuic: They might like the ride from the bay up to Montjuic on the cable cars, plus the fountain in the evening and a look around the area.
Add to your list street fairs and stalls for fun, inexpensive shopping. This April on a weekend we found many in plazas and parks around the city. Yes to a metro pass. We shared a 10-ride pass between us. Both bus and metro were easy to use, wlll save time and feet. RS gives some good ideas for combining attractions (Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell) via public transportation. Lip gloss in pocket, no purse? Would that fly with your group? We had not one instance of feeling at risk, but we're mature travelers. Your girls aren't. I'd hate to have you have to deal with something unpleasant. Marian
