We will be traveling to San Sebastian from Barcelona in late May. We are trying to determine whether it is better to fly or take the train. Please advise.
Unfortunately, the only airline that flies this route is Iberia's regional carrier. So, with no competition, fares are high. The cheapest you could probably fly for would be about $200 U.S for a R/T ticket (throw away the return portion if you're not returning), with one-way fares even higher.
The train is probably your best bet. The journey takes about 5.5 hours and there are two trains/day...one in the early morning, the other in mid-afternoon. It travels along the fringe of the Pyreness, past Zaragoza and Pamplona. Walk-up tickets are about 60 Euro for second class. But you can book them up to 62 days in advance for as low as 25 Euro at www.renfe.es
If you do decide on the train, post again or PM...the renfe site can be a bit of a chore to navigate, since it's mostly in Spanish. But it's worth the savings, and you'll be able to print out your tickets before you leave.
