What are my options taking a train from Barcelona to Genoa? I couldn't find anything on trenitalia or raileurope. It could be either a day or night train. Thanks!
I like to use the DBahn site to research my trains: http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en Unfortunately, you cannot check dates more than two months out. However, you can check the schedule for the same day of week you may be travelling and get an idea of what may be available. It's approx. 18 hrs. to Genova.
Jane, this is a really long train trip. First, you will be on Renfe from the Barcelona Sants train station to the Figures-Vilafant train station (also in Spain) where you change to the French train system. Then, you take a couple of different trains across souther France to Ventimiglia which is just inside the Italian border. At Ventimiglia, you can then board your final train to Genoa Piazza Principe. You can see the Ventimiglia/Genoa part of the journey on www.trenitalia.com. Note that the train changes at Figures in Spain and Ventimiglia in Italy are compulsory train change locations. Depending on the time you choose to depart Barcelona Sants, this is a minimum 15hr journey. Some runs take almost 18.5hrs. As mentioned above, you can see the entire run on www.bahn.de which is the German train website.
You should save yourself a day and probably money by flying. Unless you really love train travel or can not fly.
Thanks for all the info. Has anyone taken the Elipsos Salvador Dali night train from Barcelona to Milano or vice vers? It leaves around 7:30 pm and arrives the next day around 9:45 am.
