Does the subway in Barcelona go directly to the airport? How do we get from airport to Placa de Catalunya from airport? Is subway easiest way or taxi?
The metro doesn't run to the airport. The Airbus (line A1) runs from all three terminals to Placa Catalunya every 10-15 minutes depending on the time of day, from about 6 in the morning til 1 the next morning. There are ticket machines at each of the airport stops....if they aren't working (and they never seem to be), buy your ticket from the driver, at 3.75 Euro. Travel time is about 40 minutes. There's a train every half hour to Sants station, at 2.50 Euro, but then you have to switch to the metro to get to Placa Catalunya. Taxis will be about 18 Euro during the day, and about 21 at night or on weekends....1 Euro extra per bag.
We took a train from the Barcelona airport and connected to the metro. It was easy as the train station is accessible via a footbridge. We went to the TI in the airport and they were very helpful in telling us what train and metro line to catch to our hotel.
I took the A1 bus from the Airport to Placa de Catalunya in April when I was there. It was very convenient and cheap. I used it for both ways. It runs frequently and is a lot faster than the metro which I do not think went direct to the Airport. You can pay right on the bus. Have a great time in BCN. -Kim
Norm is, as usual, right on target with his train/bus comments. The only thing he didn't mention in his post was that the T-10 metro/bus pass is valid for the ride out to the airport. (Probably not a bad way to use that last ride.) Personally, I always take the metro to Sants, and from there, the train to the airport in order to remove traffic pile-ups from my time calculations. On the other hand, the trains have not been very punctual of late, so...
Take the bus that drops you off in the city. My husband tried to be adventurous with the rail/subway, and a 30 minute trip took us 1 hour.
The taxi isn't expensive... about 25-28 euros. That will be the easiest if you have luggage.
