Barcelona - Sagrada Familia

I am going to be in Barcelona in October. I see that you can climb the Sagrada Familia for a great view. Has anyone done this? What do you think - is it worth it? I would like to try it if others feel it is worth the hike. I am 57 - but I work out four times a week. Thanks for your input. Stephanie, Loveland

Yes. I've been to Barcelona 3 times over about 20 years (yikes!) and have climbed the towers there on each visit. Well, I climb every big tower I encounter in Europe, so I may not be typical, but I would say it's absolutely worth it. Wouldn't you feel like you had really missed smething important if you went there and didn't climb it?

For what it's worth, I thought the Sagrada Familia was the most amazing structure I've ever seen.

Thanks - I was hoping for a postive response - I will definitely climb the Sagrada Familia - I made it to the top of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris - lots of huffing and puffing - that's when I started working out.

I just returned from Barcelona and went to Sagrada Familia. I didn't go up the tower - I think there is a lift and the wait was over an hour. I don't remember seeing stairs that you could climb but I may be wrong. I loved the outside of the church but was not real excited about seeing the inside. I liked the view from Park Guell and the time spent at Monserrat more though.

The stairs up are not always open, the stairs down are. If you suffer from vertigo or the like you may want to give it a miss There are, however, 2 lifts. The one closest to the enterance is the one everyone lines up at. There is another lift that had a much shorter 10 minute wait. You can also get to the roof of the cathedral in Barri Gotic as well.

Hi Stephanie!
I visited the Sagrada Familia about 2 months ago- I agree with the other posters here, it's the most amazing structure!
I thought the inside was as spectacular, in it's own way, as the exterior. The stained glass windows are just beautiful riots of colour; and although there is scaffolding and construction everywhere, if you stand still and look straight up, the ceiling is beautiful. When you look at the structure of the supports, which look like stems or stalks, and then the design on the ceiling, it feels like you're standing in a field of giant sunflowers! Well that's the effect it had on me, and I promise I hadn't started drinking wine yet that day!
The museum underneath is also fascinating and really explains what Gaudi was about.
But did I climb the stairs outside? No! Too much of a whimp! Also my husband gets vertigo, so we stayed earthbound.
But we did climb the house that Gaudi built and that was fabulous.
Have a great trip!

Definitely YES!! I don't like climbing so I Paid the money to go up on the lift and see the view. The walk down is not difficult, but it does spiral.
