My wife and i are staying in Barcelona mid-June with our two children ages 7 and 6. We are renting an apartment and we have a choice between one in the Eixample neighborhood and one in the Borne neighborhood. We are concerned about safety, especially at night but we also want to have a true Barcelona experience. Any advice?

The Eixample neighborhood is VERY upscale, so I would think it is fine at night. We walked all over the various neighborhoods in the early evening (before 9:00) and never had any hint of trouble. I can't imagine you would be out later than that with kids.

Personally, I love El Born. It is a vibrant, dynamic neighborhood. While seedier than Eixample, it is in the process of gentrification, and will be no problem for anyone who has managed to survive the streets of San Francisco. Enjoy your stay.
