In Madrid, try Hostal Cruz Sol or Hostal Santa Cruz, two wonderful little modernized two-star hotels on Plaza Santa Cruz. Rates are @50 Euro/night. The little plaza is 300 meters from Sol, and about 50 meters from Plaza Mayor...but because it's not directly in between, you don't get the massive pedestrian traffic flow. See the building they're in, and surroundng location at maps.google.com by copying and pasting these coordinates (40.415277,-3.705619)

A friend of mine was just here for a visit, and stayed at the Marina View B&B (marinaviewbcn.com). The place was clean, my friend said that the breakfasts were good, the folks were very friendly and the location is hard to beat.
