Barcelona Itinerary?

I'm looking at my week in Barcelona and trying to figure out what to do when, and would appreciate any input. As it stands, I have days devoted to different sections of the city, with one day in the port/beach area, one day in the gothic quarter and environs, one day spent in gracia/parc guell, one day in montjuic...which leaves me with two full days for side trips. does this work, and if so, are there specific days of the week i should avoid for certain attractions and/or day trips? the two day trips i'm thinking about are montserrat and tarragona, though i think i could make montserrat a half day trip and combine it with one of my already planned days, opening up an additional day trip day--i am open for suggestions for this as well.

travel notes: trip is during the month of august. i'm hoping to do at least one cooking class and a bike tour (bike tour early on in the week) i'm staying right on the edge of the example, slightly south west of las ramblas. i arrive late afternoon on a flight from paris on a monday and leave very early the following monday for london. i am travling by myself, so i can do whatever i want, whenever i want.

thank you in advance for any advice!

I went to Montserrat in January and found it to be worthwhile, mostly for the setting and the nice art museum they have there. The City Museum and Parc Guell are both great. Casa Mila and Casa Bottlo are both nice too, although the latter is very expensive.

I think your itinerary looks good, a half day to Montserrat might be to short, especially if you plan on hiking. If you are into wines, there is some organized tours from Barcelona to the Penedes vallee, not too far, we enjoyed it (we had a car thought). Try to be in the Montjuic area in early evening for the fountain show (thursday to sunday only). Agree that casa balto is very expensive, casa mila was nice! Have fun!

I did a week in Barcelona. About the perfect amount of time although, I didn't get to see everything I wanted to. I guess iw ill have to go back.
I did a hop on hop off bus. that way you get a good overview of the city. I am not usually a fan of modern art but went to the Joan Miro museum and it was great. not to mention beautiful views of the city. Have a great time!!!

Tarragona is certainly worth a visit, particularly if you're into Roman ruins and such. We just returned and really fell in love with it. I think you could get a good feel for it in one day. We spent three nights and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

@Sarah--actually, it was the RS barcelona episode (that i watched online) that made me consider--and eventually finalize--barcelona as my solo trip destination (i added on some time at the end of a trip with my husband to explore on my own, in preparation for a possible longer solo journey next year--i'm not leaving my husband or anything, but he has to work in summer and i don't!) i had not even considered any part of spain, but i saw that episode (and then did LOTS of additional research) and i was sold.

We are leaving in 2 weeks for our trip to Spain. We are taking our family on a bike tour of Barcelona on Fat Tire Bikes. We've heard great things about it.

Unless it's too late to do it, rent Rick's travel show on Spain that includes Barcelona. You can get it from Netflix. We bought a copy so we could study it often for our upcoming September trip, then compared the images with Rick's narrative in his Spain book. It's proved to be a good way to figure out how best to use our time. My husband is a fine artist, so we know we will spend more time in the "company" of Spain's art museums, but regardless this research is useful.
