Barcelona in July

My daughter will be studying this summer in Barcelona. At the end of her studies I plan to join her for a week. We have never been to Spain and would love a suggested itinerary for a great week, including travel out of Barcelona. I would like to see Girona She will have already visited Madrid and Toledo. We are willing to rent a car or travel by train or plane. I also need suggestions for a well located place to stay in Barcelona moderately priced.

I visited Girona last September. It's only about an hour by train from Barcelona. The old Jewish Quarter, across the river, is beautiful, and the Jewish Museum is quite interesting.

The Montserrat monastery, a famous pilgrimage site outside of Barcelona, is not to be missed. Take the train from downtown Barcelona (Plaza de Espana) and get off at the Montserrat Aeri station, where you take the tram up the mountain. Your train ticket includes the ride on the tram.

If you need to eat lunch at Montserrat, the cafeteria has good food and is very reasonably priced. There is also a formal restaurant in the only hotel at the monastery, but it's very pricey.

In Barcelona, I've stayed at the centrally located Hotel Splendid. http://hotel-splendid.com/ Double rooms start at around 100 Euros a night, depending on the season. Friendly, helpful staff. Their nice breakfast buffet is extra, but if you book it with the room, they give you a discount.
