Feb 2009 we visited Madrid, Granada, Sevilla, booking hotels 9 months in advance. On arrival we found that, due to the current economy, rooms were going for much less than the price we were locked into by reserving ahead with a credit card. We loved Spain and plan to return again in February, to Barcelona this time, but only reserve the first night and play the rest by ear as we could have done this past trip (on hindsight). However I'm reading that this may not be a good idea in Barcelona since it's such a popular year-round destination. We are going for 3 weeks and would like the freedom to move about to other places in the area, and along the coast. Any suggestions? Are we taking a chance on sleeping on a park bench if we go without reservations and a definite plan?
