Or rather, the Barcelona area. We are taking a 7 day cruise, and one of the stops is Barcelona. Up to this point, we just planned on using the walking tour outlined in RS's Cruising the Mediterranean book. However, as I did some research on the area today, I became familiar with Montserrat and I'm dying to go. I've already bought Sagrada Familia passes (we became Friends of Sagrada to get passes that we don't have to pick a time for nor wait in line - fabulous deal for those travelling with a family), and the church is on our must-do list. But if we get off the ship and visit Sagrada Familia first thing, do you think it's possible to get up to Montserrat and back before 6? We are in port from 9-6. It's an hour each way, but has anyone done both successfully?
I would stay in Barcelona. Montserrat is at least a half-day trip, even if it's done quickly. And you don't want to risk missing your ship, and there's a million great things to see and experience just in central Barcelona itself. Plus you'll want at least 2-3 hours for Sagrada Familia. And keep in mind exiting the ship and getting to the church will take a while as well.
I agree with Sarah. It might be possible to see the Sagrada, make the trip to Monserrat and get back to your ship in time, but you risk too much if it doesn't work out. Barcelona is so rich is sights, that you'll barely scratch the surface of the city in the 9-6 time frame you have to work in. We absolutely loved Barc. Enjoy your trip.
I appreciate your input. You are probably right. I guess I will have to put it on my bucket list to return to!
