Hotel Albinoni Catalunia, just off Placa de Catalunia, easy walking distance to Bari Gotic, Las Ramblas, L' Eixample, and more. Spent three nights there in December.

Depends on how you define "affordable," but I liked the Hotel Apsis Splendid, Carrer de Muntaner, 2. 100 Euros and up a night double, depending on the dates. Free wifi in rooms. Helpful staff, speaks English. Nice breakfast buffet (at a discount if you book it at the same time as the room).
