Barcelona Budget Hotel suggestions

I am staying with my sister and cousin in Barcelona for 4 nights before Easter (March 31 - April 4) and am struggling to find an inexpensive hotel in a central location. We are hoping to pay less than $100 per night.

We are seriously considering Hotel El Jardi and Hosteria Grau, close to the Ramblas but we are in our 20s and are not overly concerned about noise. But we have heard some mixed reviews on those properties and the safety of the location.

Any feedback or alternate suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Ramblas is safe, as is everything to the east. The neighborhood to the NW (behind the big market) might make you a bit uncomfortable. Most bothersome will be the idiots trying to sell you junk and the hookers (if your cousin is a guy). Plainclothes cops (male and female) are all over the place.

Try venere.com for hotels. If you stay above their user rating of about 7.5 (with a good number of raters) you should be happy.

Michelle, how about renting an apartment? it probably would be cheaper and more space for all of you.

Lots of people rent from www.vrbo.com, i have used www.friendlyrentals.com

The area called El Raval, north of La Boqueria, is quite noisy at night.

We did not stay at Hotel Jardi but the location is very good. It looked like a decent budget hotel and in a safe area--not far from the cathedral.
