The friend that I am traveling with tells me that it costs 140 euros to travel from our hotel to the airport. I didn't research it before my trip and now I am wondering if she is right or if that is just what the hotel she booked is telling her. Please advise. Thank you!
Where are you staying? The Aerobus to the airport from Placa Catalunya costs 5,30 euro. If your hotel is not within walking distance you can easily catch a cab to Place Catalunya. The bus leaves from in front of El Corte Ingles.
It's only 25 Euros from the airport to the city center. I took the train in to the city center and it was even less than that. 140 Euros seems insane unless you're staying really far out of town. Check this out; http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/airport/barcelona-airport-transport.html#taxi
At which airport are you arriving? The main airport (BCN) is called El Prat but some flights (budget airlines) arrive at Girona-Costa Brava which is 60 miles from Barcelona. A cab from Girona could cost 140 euro. In RS Spain 2011 he mentions a bus from the Girona airport to Barcelona city for 12 euro. The bus website is sagales.com There are also trains which you could research if in fact your airport turns out to Girona.
It wouldn't cost 140 Euros to hire a limousine with a hot-tub and all the martinis you could drink during the trip!! That's impossible, unless you were a group of 10 and renting an entire shuttle bus for pick-up. Check the World Taxi Meter for how much a simple taxi would cost from point A to point B. The airport transfer from Plaça Catalunya, as stated by others above, would cost much less than a taxi. Maybe the hotel meant to say 40 Euros??? That would make much more sense.
