I'm planning a trip to Barcelona, Seville, Cordoba, and Madrid. I'm a mid-30's female planning to travel alone, and am very concerned about the theft problems I've read on this site.
Are these cities safe to travel alone? And how can I safeguard my luggage when travelling between cities by train? thanks
Susan, my friend recently came back from a trip to Spain, all the cities you mentioned and more. She is a mid-50 woman, traveled solo, and did not have any problems at all. She did not wear a money belt or any special purse with a steel cable running through it, or anything like that. Just a normal purse, a normal wallet. The one advantage she had was she speaks fluent Spanish. She had a wonderful, life-changing experience on the trip, and plans to go again soon, this time to northern and west-northern Spain and Portugal. And a coworker of mine, also a woman in her mid-50, just came back from a trip to Southern France/Barcelona. One week in Barcelona, no money belt, no Spanish either, no problems whatsoever!
