I will likely have an afternoon, evening and a couple hours the next morning to spend in Bamberg in September. I'll walk anywhere; any suggestions for spending about 8-12 hours in Bamberg? Thanks for your thoughts!
If you enter Bamberg in the search box at the top right of the page, you'll get a lot of posts about Bamberg.
Thanks, Tom. I've searched there. I was hoping to get some personal specific suggestions for my very short time there. Usually folks here are very helpful.
Do you like beer? Do a google search for Bamberg breweries and beer gardens. We LOVED Bamberg. Spent one day wandering and drinking beer and eating French fries. Walking out of town there is a great beer garden up on the hill. My suggestion is just wander around and pop in every once in a while for a beer. Beautiful town and really nice people. We met a group in a pub and they were warm and funny and so happy that we loved their city.
I think this is the site I printed out a list of breweries from: http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/bambpubs.htm
We did the same as Bronwen and had a fantastic day. We even spent more time than planned kibbutzing with the folks at the cafe while drinking more beer than planned as well. The town is beautiful and eminently walkable. If you come across our lost memory card while strolling around Bamberg please holler.
bronwen and Denny: Thanks so much for your replies; I probably should check out the cathedral* first, and then just wander around and try the beer! Sure hope the weather cooperates that day! I'll definitely print out the list of breweries, too; there's a lot of good information on that website! And I'll keep a lookout for your lost memory card, Denny! Thanks again! *does anybody know whether it is possible to go up in any of the four towers of the cathedral? I couldn't find anything about the towers when I was reading.
Go to the TI's office at Geyerswörthstraße 5 and ask for the keys to the the Tower in Geyerswörth Castle near the Altes Rathaus. There are numerous steps that will lead you to the top where you have a beautiful view out over the red rooftops of Bamberg! Next to the Cathedral is the Old Imperial Court, which was the former palace of Emperor Henry II. The inner courtyard is surrounded by half-timbered buildings and the remains of the old Diet Hall. Across from the Dom is the New Residence of the Prince Bishop. Even if you don't have time to do a tour of the New Residence, do go to the Rose Garten where you can see more great views of the city.
Thanks, Betty! Will definitely put that on my list!
