I need another night in southern Germany. Both places have been recommended. Our trip in in late November. Recommendation please?
Can't speak for Passau but I've been to Bamberg and loved the little town.
I haven't been to Bamberg yet but we stopped briefly in Passau during our recent trip back in May. We were in route between Linz and Regensburg. Passau is a beautiful place. The old town is on a peninsula between the Danube and Inn rivers. The baroque cathedral is just a short walk from the train station and the organ there was huge. The city has lots of narrow streets and interestng architecture, and a stroll along the promenade by the river is worth taking for the fantastic views. There is a castle across the Danube River from the old city that we would have liked to visit but didn't have the time. We only had a few hours to spend during our stopover but I think you could see most of the major sights in Passau in a day.
I've been to both (two days apart). Both have their virtues. I can't say I would prefer one over the other. Maybe which is the easiest to get to from where you are.
I think Bamberg has more to offer than Passau. Altho the scenery at Passau with the rivers is superior to the scenery at Bamberg. Bamberg has more old buildings to look at and visit. Both are nice places to visit. You probably can't go wrong.
My dad was born in Bamberg, on my last visit his cousin gave us a guided tour of the city and the Prince of Bavaria's residence. It's beautiful.
