Bamberg, Germany

We are looking for another day trip from Munich and are considering Bamberg. Is it worth the trip? Or, is it a city worth spending the night?

Bamberg is definitely worth spending a night in my opinion.

Another possibility is Regensburg, quite a bit closer but equally as nice as Bamberg. It is about 1.5 hours by train using local transport and therefore the Bayern-Ticket, which is a good bargain (20 euro for a single or 28 euros for 2-5 people).

I think wikipedia does the best job of describing Regensburg if you do a google or yahoo search.

Bamberg is worth the trip but it is a little far for a day trip from Munich. Gary is right about Regensberg and that would make for a nice day trip.

Bamberg is one of my favorite places in Germany and when I was there in May there were very few tourists (unlike other popular destinations like Rothenburg) and it was just as nice. Great especially if you love beer :). Definitely check out Spezial-Keller.

It depends on what your interests are. Bamberg is one of my favorite cities in Europe, although I am a bit biased as much of my family live there. It is a world heritage site with many well-preserved buildings from it's 1000 year history: Romanesque, Gothic, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque. It has a fairly compact historic center with a large pedestrian zone. Definitely worth a full day, and considering the distance, an overnight. You could include a short stop in Nuernberg on your return to Munich.

Thanks for all of the quick replies. We have decided to spend a day in Bamberg and spend the night. Great hotel rates in November.

I too will be staying in Bamberg with my wife and adult son in September. I research towns between Frankfurt and Munich I set aside three days to explore. Bamberg was recommended by many. I then heard of the breweries of Bamberg. Decided to stay two days to prep us for our stay in Mucnich for Octoberfest.
