We enjoy spending time in the Black Forest and Bavaria. Is it worth a one or two day side trip to see Bamberg and Regensburg?
Bamberg and Regensburg ARE in Bavaria. Where are you already planning to be in Bavaria? The answer might depend on how far you have to go to see them.
It also depends on what you want to see. Two years ago, I was going to be in Wuerzburg (2 nts) and Nuernberg (1 nt), so I arranged to stop in Bamberg on the way. Bamberg was cute. I had to see the city hall that is cantilevered out over the river from the bridge, but I stumbled on a street fair nearby and enjoyed some great food for lunch.
You need to go on the Bamberg website (English version) and see if there is anything there you want to see.
BTW, if you are arriving by train, there is a bus from the Bahnhof (stops across the street) to the ZOB (Zentraler Omnibus Bahnhof) on Promanade Str. There, if you need a locker, there are many more than at the Bahnhof, and they are less expensive. From the ZOB, it is a short walk to the city hall. The tourist information office is just across the street. As I recall there are numerous plaques around town with maps.
You can see what there is to see in Regensburg at www.regensburg.de.
Hi Lee, thanks for the response. We're flying into Amsterdam on 11/21 and driving through Bruges, Ghent and Brussels. Then on to Bastogne, Verdun and Lux City. Then to Baden Baden, Staufen, Bad Tolz, Gmund am Tegernsee. Then a couple days in Munich. With 2-3 days left, we're debating between Wurzburg, Nurnberg (we've been to both before and enjoy them), Bamberg and Regensburg. Then we need to hit the autobahn back to Amsterdam and fly home on 12/6. We tend to enjoy smaller walkable villages more than the big cities. We love architecture, history, castle ruins, scenery and hiking. We're open to any and all suggestions.
Regenburg is very nice, but can I suggest Passau? Located where the Inn and Danube come together, it is very picturesque. Nice castle of the Prince- Bishop above the city and very beautiful streets to wander around in. Gorgeous Baroque cathedral with daily (in summer) organ concerts. I preferred it to Regensburg. Just another idea to consider.
So you are probably going from Staufen to Bad Toelz. There are a whole lot of things to see directly inline. Have you ever been to the Bodensee - Mainau, Konstanz, Friedrichshafen (Zeppelin Museum), Lindau. A little north of Lindau is Oberstaufen (that definitely fulfills your desire for a small walkable town. And don't ignore the Illertal of the Oberallgaeu, with the ski town of Oberstdorf and the Kleinwalsertal. A personal favorite of mine is Pfronten, right at the border of Germany and the Tirol, close to Reutte, which I wouldn't bother to see. Have you already seen the castles near Fuessen? Garmisch-Partenkirchen? Oberammergau? Linderhof? Mittenwald?
Bamberg and Passau are nice, but why go so far out of your way.?
I loved Bamberg. But I also love beer. And that is the place to be.
My wife, son and I spent two days in Bamberg in early October. Bamberg is a wonderful walkable Bavarian village crammed full of small historic breweries. It is a beer lovers Disney World but you don't have to have a lick of brew to enjoy this town. We used Bamberg as a base for a side trip to Wurtzberg. As our distination post Bamberg was Munich Octoberfest, a night stay in Rothenberg was on our itinerary too, it was worth it. Be careful not to over do it, pace yourself.
