Backpacking Essentials

Besides the obvious of clothes and toiletries, is there any thing else essential to backpacking through Europe? After reading a few guides, I've come across and will be bringing the following: A lock Money belt
Compass Anything else to consider?

Here's a few things I wish I would have remembered: Travel forks and spoons Cork screw / bottle opener Hand Sanitizer
Towel (if staying at hostel! DON'T forget one) Mini first aid kit

Carry your own washcloth/face cloth, in a ZipLoc bag so you can stash it while still damp. This isn't so much a backpacker tip as it is a rule for many European hotels. A small flashlight is a handy accessory for late-night walking.

Kris, If this is your first trip to Europe, I'd highly recommend reading Europe Through The Back Door prior to your trip. It provides a lot of good information! I have a few comments to add.... > Lock - be sure that it's a robust and high quality Padlock, but not too large. A model with "heel & toe" locking is best (ask a Locksmith about that). DO NOT use the small TSA Locks for Hostel Lockers as they're simply not strong enough. > If your Backpack is a panel-loading model (with zippers), it's a good idea to have at least one TSA-style Padlock. While that only provides minimal theft protection, it tends to discourage opportunistic theft. > If you're staying in Hostels: Towel (micro-fiber type), Face Cloth if you'll use it (I don't usually), Flip-Flops for the shower and of course soap / shampoo. > I definitely agree with the previous suggestion for a small Flashlight (preferably an LED model). Some travellers that I've seen have used the Petzl headlamps rather than a conventional flashlight. > Travel Alarm Clock (I normally use my Cell Phone for that). > I also agree that a small First Aid kit, including Moleskin if you're prone to getting blisters. > If you use corrective lenses, pack along AT LEAST one extra pair. If you're going to keep your Passport in the Money Belt, be sure to place it inside a small zip-lok bag to prevent perspiration damage. Happy travels!

Thanks guys. Really appreciate the replies. It's not my first Euro trip, but my first backpacking one. I'm wondering if a a combination lock that's used on high school gym lockers here would fit on the hostel lockers there?

Kris, Is the Padlock that you're considering a Dudley model? The size is about right for Hostel Lockers, but they only provide somewhat "limited" security. If you check the net, you'll find numerous websites and You Tube videos on how to "crack" Dudley Locks. While Hostel Lockers are not terribly robust, I always prefer to use a good quality Padlock. Just for information, you might have a look at some Locks in the local Locksmiths shop.
