We will be traveling to Vienna by train. Any suggestions of a B & B? We would prefer a place within walking distance or by bus to town since we will not have a vehicle. Thanks!!
I’ll recommend this small hotel, about half a block from the opera house. It’s easy walking distance to all major sites in the center: http://www.pension-suzanne.at/english/lage.htm
Check tripadvisor for reviews and photos…highly rated and reasonably-priced. You’ll need to ignore the building façade…sort of a Soviet style government structure outside but a great hotel once inside and up the stairs. You might be hard-pressed to find a true B&B in such a major city center, but pensions/small hotels like this one are all over.
I second that recommendation. We stayed there in December 2008 and it was lovely and very, very centrally located in the pedestrian zone and close to the subway. Also, the prices are reasonable, the breakfast very nice, and the staff friendly and helpful.
Another place is Pension Nossek, which is recommended in several guidebooks, including RS. In fact, I had first emailed Pension Suzanne about staying there during my upcoming September trip. They were full, but referred me to Pension Nossek, and I've heard many good things about it since then.
Yes, try to book the Pension Suzanne. We were there in July and found it to have a great location with a nice grocery store on the corner to boot..Very helpful staff too.
One more vote for Pensione Suzanne! A little old-fashioned, dated...but you are in the capital of a once grand (and now a little dusty) Empire. The combination of location and price and cleanliness and size (of the rooms) cannot be beat. We were also there last month. At first, felt like we were staying in our grandparents' apartment, but like I said, it's comfortable (large rooms by European standards), quite welcoming, and perfectly located for the old city. We moved through Austria by train, only, and this was a short taxi hop from the station and within easy walking distance of all.
