Currently traveling in Germany by car and will be heading to Munich in a few days. I'm looking for a private room or pension on the ourtskirts of Munich. I would like your personal recommendations. prefer something near the train as I don't want to drive into the city. I've done the usual web searches such as local tourist information sites.

I do not remember the names of either of the hotels we have stayed in because it has been some years now, but they were both located in the old town section of Dachau. This is just north of Munich, and it has transit access to the city. While Dachau is infamous because of the nearby Concentration Camp, the old town is quite nice and comfortable for a base in this area.
I know of this great little hotel in the outskirts of Munich. It reasonably priced, 2 blocks from an S-Bahn station, 25 min from Marienplatz. I've stayed there 16 nights. But, they don't speak English, just German.
If you don't mind being a little farther out (still less than an hour by train), Landsberg am Lech is a lovely little town, worth a visit in it's own right. I stayed in Augsburger Hof. They spoke English.
