I'm looking for a B & B in both places. Any suggestions? Which town is more "Swiss" (with the chalets and cows with bells, quaint etc.)?
Yikes. I was looking for a B & B in Lauterbrunnen and can't seem to find any. Any suggestions?
If you want real Alpine Swiss villages with cow bells and wild-flower meadows and giant waterfalls from melting glaciers then head to the Lauterbrunnen Valley near Interlake. Yes, there are some places around Luzern, but you can actually immerse yourself in Lauterbrunnen and the surrounding mountain villages of Murren and Wengen.
I agree with Tim. I've been to L. twice so I could go to Wengen, but am hoping to go to Murren and Gimmelwald this summer. However, in Zermatt there is a hostel and I got great pics of the goats coming home from the mts. in the p.m. in the street. Great sight. Clean, clear water at the fountain and we climbed up to Zum Zee and tried to talk to an older lady cutting grass on the hillside. Luzern is a city with lots of history and very beautiful Kultural Center. Try www.myswitzerland.ch and see what you can find for accomodations. gnannear
Thanks for your replies. You sent great info. Does the train system run to Luterbrunnen? We'll be coming from Cinque Terre in Italy. This sounds like the perfect place!
one more thing about Lauterbrunnen - is it surrounded by the Alps? I really would like a place in the middle of the mountains or with a good view at least!
Zermatt is really really quaint. Many easy day hikes in area, and yes one goes through fields, past chalets and by goats,, I loved it, and it is a no auto town, you take a train up and the only motorized vehicles are for residents, only in certain areas and they were electric. We did serveral hikes, some an hour long, and some day hikes, we hiked up to the hut at base of Matterhorn too, plus we took a train up to Gronegrat where you will have an incredible view into Italy and France also!
It just keeps getting better and better. Thanks for your reply. I am SO ready to see the "quaint" Switzerland!
Hi,
Couldn't agree more with staying in the Berner Oberland! You can look up B&B's in Wengen at:
We stayed at Hotel Eiger (not a B&B,) but have heard very good things about
Hotel Baren:

Oh, in reply to your other questions:
Yes the train goes to Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Grindelwald. We travelled using an 8 day "Swiss Pass".
Is Lauterbrunnen surrounded by mountains... YES!!!!
My opinion is the views are better from Wengen (higher elevation) which is also surrounded by Alps (as is everywhere in the BO) and overlooking the valley where Lauterbrunen is located.

Try the Chalet Fontana in Murren for dirt cheap prices and a fantastic hostess in Denise Fussell. Look on tripadvisor.com for reviews.
Also, Lauterbrunnnen Valley sits dead center of the Alps.
All of your replies are wonderful. I can't wait to get there! I'm afraid I won't want to leave! Thank you so much for all your help. I'll start investigating the places you have suggested to stay.
I have been to Zermatt, Murren, and Lucerne. You said you will be coming from CT. We were in CT in Sept. I would consider how many days you have and where are you going after that. If you are flying home, what airport. We have been to Zermatt twice and love it, but it is tucked out of the way and will take longer to get to then Murren and Zermatt which are both car free. There is a bus that runs around an area of Zermatt, but Murren you just walk. If you love walking there are many beautiful walks in both Zermatt and Murren. The Alps and the alpine meadows are magical. In Zermatt you have the Matterhorn and in Murren you have views of the Eiger. My husband wish is to go back and explore more of the area around Murren, since we had allotted so little time there.
elodie: That's exactly the way I feel about Murren. I hate to leave it. Zermatt was too crowded and touristy for my tastes.
