My husband and I are going to Germany in late June/early July. First trip. Can we book B&B's as we go or is it better to make reservations? Our schedule is flexible. Pleas help.
At that time of year, I would make reservations. You can get away with traveling without reservations from October - April in my opinion. If the kids are out of school, I would make reservations. I traveled in Germany end of Sept - Oct. and had no issues but would not attempt it in the summer.
Please be aware that school vacations are staggered through Germany and that kids may still be in school in Munich, but be out in Cologne.
Here is a website to check the vacation dates throughout the year in Germany. If you are unsure of which state the city you will be in is in, just check Wikipedia.

reserve ahead
If you are traveling by car, you can just drive around the area you want to rent in and watch for zimmer signs in the front yards. No reservation needed.
If by train, stop at the Tourist Information Office in the RR station when you arrive and ask about a B&B. Usually the clerk will give you some options. In some cases he will phone and reserve a room for you.
I just remembered advice given me 20 years ago about renting rooms. Always look it before you agree to take it.
I have followed that suggestion. Owners never seem to be disappointed when I tell them I will look further. Someone said, most of them expect visitors to inspect a room before renting. You won't be the first to say no.
Depends on where you are going in Germany. If it's a big city or someplace that's heavily touristed, you may want to make reservations. Smaller towns are easier.
