Hi everyone, As part of a three week itinerary across the south of France (September) we are staying four nights in Villefranche starting on a Friday. I want to plan some activities that avoid the cruise ship crowds. A quick internet search did not tell me if there are any specific days of the week that are worse than others. Does anybody know if there are particular days the cruise ships come in, or is it everyday? Also I had a look at one cruise company's excursions for Villefranche and they weren't offering the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, which surprised me. It seemed to be mostly Nice, Monaco and Eze. Do many passengers stay in Villefranche? Any tips on making sure I don't bump right into a gigantic group on a cruise excursion would be appreciated. (having recently enjoyed a Caribbean cruise for the first time I saw how port day was like an invasion). Maybe the area is large enough to dispurse the crowds without too much impact? Thanks in advance for any input.
As far as I can tell, in the season, its pretty much every day. Last day we were there I counted 6 ships. The town does pretty well with them though. To get to the Villa is easy with a small bus that goes frequently and cheap. You don't need a guide to take you round. We loved the gardens and fountains, didn't think so much of the house and didn't eat in the restaurant. Fantastic views over both sides of Cap Ferrat, as you are in the saddle of the land.
Tourists trying to avoid tourists!
Pretty much what Nigel said. I've stayed in Villefranche twice and never had a problem with people coming off cruise ships although I didn't like that the ship itself ruined the view from the harbor. I did like the house at the Rothschild estate and have eaten at the restaurant twice and loved it both times. The gardens are fantastic. It's also possible to walk to the Rothschild house from Villefranche, and it's a really nice walk past some wonderful scenery.
