We will be traveling by car from Avignon to sarlat and have decided to go through Aveyrpon area to get to sarlat. We want to visit some of the beautiful towns along the wqay. Can you tell us any specila places to stay overnignt and what towns are a must on the way.
I recommend the Grotte du Peche Merle and St. Cirq la Popie in the Lot as places to visit enroute. St. Cirq could be a charming overnight too, though it is most of the way there. If you were to stay there, I'd save Peche Merle for the next day.
Hi Caroline...This is a lovely drive. There are so many things to see along the way. We made a similar drive last Fall. Two of our favorites that are on the list of the prettiest villages in France are Belcastel and Sauveterre de Rouergue. The scenery in this area is stunning. Both of these villages are with in 15 miles of each other with Belcastel being east of Rodez about 15 miles and Sauveterre being 15 miles south east of Rodez. Both villages have incredible accommodations. One of the interesting facts about the Aveyron is that although it is very rural it has a lot of wonderful places to stay with many Michelin stared restaurants. In Belcastel there is the Vieux Pont... just wonderful..both a fabulous small guesthouse and a restaurant. There is also a castle that you can tour. Reservations are a must. In Sauveterre... Michel Truchon has a hotel and restaurant called Le Senechal and it is also a must. The village of Sauveterre is an historic bastide village with many artisans working in the town. Many other things to do along the way... you may never want to leave this area.
