My husband and I have rented in apartment in Avignon for a week in November. I recently had someone at work tell me that they were planning to go there this summer, but after hearing that there were some crime problems there, chose to go somewhere else. Has anyone else heard anything like this? Everything I've looked at or read would lead me to believe it's as safe as Seattle. Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks,
Ruth
Yes, you're correct: it's as safe as Seattle, probably safer in terms of violent crime. Of course take the precautions you would when traveling anywhere in Europe, including keeping your "my trip is seriously disrupted if the pick-pockets get this" items in a money belt worn under your clothing. Then you have peace of mind.
Avignon is fine. I didn't see anything I would consider to be out of the ordinary. One source of information about the potential for violent crime (pickpocketing and petty theft can happen anywhere) is the State Department's website which posts traveler alerts for specific countries.
I had no problems when I was by myself there last spring. Avignon is a beautiful place and I wouldn't be discouraged going there. It is just as safe as anywhere in North America or througout Europe.
Thanks so much to everyone who replied--and yes-- we're equipped with our money belts!
always good to know how to prepare~Thanks again!
