austrian highway licence

Trevelling east and south around Lake Constance to ST Gallen from Germany: is there an Austrian licence fee required to do this via Austria? Would you recommend the ferry from Friedrichshafen; I have a car? Thanks. Al Boyd

If you drive via the Autobahn, you have to pay a transit fee (or, you could buy the Austrian vignette, but there's no reason if you're not doing any more traveling in Austria). There's a border station where you pay. Alternatively, you can drive along the secondary roads through Bregenz until you reach the Swiss border, where of course, you'll need to have a Swiss vignette. I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think you need the Austrian vignette on secondary roads.

You can avoid paying the vignette fee, but you must detour via Brengez streets. You cannot use the highway tunnel, you cannot even enter Austria via the Autobahn. This is the detour route: http://goo.gl/maps/e4Dd6

I've done the Bregenz - drive back roads - avoid the vignette - bit a few years ago. Its not a barrel of laughs. It is quite difficult.
