I don't know what you consider "great" (maybe you are looking for Michelin stars or something), but I had a really delicious meal at Puerstner in Vienna. It came highly recommended by locals on TripAdvisor and didn't disappoint. On a quiet side street close to St. Stephans. very reasonable prices.

We were in Salzburg many years ago and enjoyed an elegant dinner at the Goldener Hirsch hotel's restaurant. Venison, as I remember.

Stuart, I don't know where you are staying in Vienna, but we stayed at Pension Aviano and ate at a delightful little restaurant around the corner: Restaurant Fuhrich. We were there this past Dec. and celebrated my husband's birthday. The staff were pleased to celebrate with us and made the evening perfect. The food is Austrian and very good with reasonable prices. And if you haven't found a place to stay, the Pension Aviano is one of those well-kept secrets that you love to find in a city. We stayed in room 304 and felt like royalty.
