Looking for some help from the Austria experts! We will visit mid-May and will start with 5 days in Vienna and end up with 4 days in Munich. I am looking for suggestions for another 3 days in Austria in the middle of our trip. We will have a car and will be travelling with our 5 year old twins. Thinking of a visit to Melk and maybe a boat ride on the Danube but need suggestions beyond that. We aren't interested in hiking but would like the kids to experience the Alps. Is there a good place to either drive up into the mountains or take a gondola up? We have been to Salzburg a couple of times so aren't interested in going back on this trip but are there any other cities that might have fun things for kids (i.e. castles, farm visit, etc)?
Appreciate all suggestions!
Lermoos, Austria which is south of Garmisch and in the Zugspitze Arena, has lots of hiking, a summer luge ride in Biberwier and a gondola that goes from Ehrwald up to the Zugspitze. You can also take a lift in the summer up into the hills to hike. From Lermoos, it's an easy drive to the castles in Fuessen and an easy drive up to Munich. If you would like lodging recommendations, send me a personal message.
Hi Julie, The Zugspitze Arena area is a good suggestion. Just some thoughts: 1) Have you been to the Berchtesgaden/Konigsee area? Here, the Rossfeld Panorama Road may fit the bill. The Jennerbahn cable car and a cruise on the Konigsee. Our favorite place to stay in the area is the Pension Mayringerlehen in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, a farm with goats, chickens, cows, guinea pigs, etc. www.mayringerlehen.de www.worldisround.com/articles/355548/index.html 2) Zell am See, which could include a drive along the amazing Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. www.grossglockner.at/en/ 3) Hall in Tirol/Innsbruck area. We can highly recommend a stay at the Gasthof badl in Hall in Tirol. The Nordkettenbahn cable car trip is terrific. www.badl.at www.nordkette.com/en/the-mountain-in-summer.html 4) The Zillertal, which is about an hour east from Innsbruck. Gorgeous alpine scenery. You could drive the Zillertal Hohenstrasse. www.zillertaler-hoehenstrasse.com/cms/ Just some suggestions.

There's a lot of great places to visit. For starters, take a look at our favorite hotel group: www.kinderhotels.com They're made-for-kids hotels in great locations. Winter is ski season and summer is lake swimming, horseback riding, etc. They have different activities daily and could help you make arrangements to see area sights. Mid-May is the off-season so you may be able to find good deals although some hotels may close for maintenance. Most have fabulous indoor pools and really good all-inclusive meals. Plus there's free kids-club if you want to go to the sauna for a bit and relax. Berchtesgaden is a good place to see the Eagle's Nest and see a Salt Mine. Also most of the lakes you'll pass to get to Salzburg have cute towns with great mtn ambiance. Attersee, Traunsee, etc. Also mentioned is Garmisch-Part. where you can see a cute town and easily get up the Zugspitze for Alps views.
